White paper: "The freight of the world"
Recent data from the TAPA Intelligence System (TIS) EMEA July report revealed that €523,188 was lost per day in July to cargo theft—though this figure is likely much higher, as only 5% of the reported crimes included a value. A total of 1,736 new crimes were reported to the TIS database during the month. The rising risk of theft is compounded by factors such as inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, with a third of freight hijackings now targeting food, according to the British Standards Association (BSI).
The European Union estimates that theft of cargo from road and rail costs €8 billion annually, underscoring the scale of the issue. Unsecured parking spaces for trucks are also a significant problem in Europe, with only 300,000 available out of the required 400,000 HGV spaces, as noted by the European Commission’s Study on Safe and Secure Parking Places for Trucks. In this challenging environment, businesses must implement comprehensive security measures to protect both employees and cargo on the road.
End-to-end supply chain security
End-to-end supply chain security goes beyond protecting cargo—it extends to safeguarding individual truck drivers, delivery personnel, and warehouse employees. With growing industry pressures, such as skills shortages and complex supply chains, it is more important than ever to have solutions in place to support and protect transport workers. According to TAPA, the increasing incidents of cargo theft in the past year are linked to a rise in deception, intrusion, and violence. In July 2024 alone, over a third of these thefts involved intrusion, and 76 cases were reported involving violence. These alarming statistics demonstrate the urgent need for comprehensive security solutions that not only protect cargo but also support and safeguard employees in the transport and logistics sectors.
Compliance with Security Standards
Adhering to TAPA security standards requires transport and logistics companies to implement robust security measures such as advanced monitoring capabilities, locking systems, cargo seals, background checks, auditing, and incident response plans. With Securitas, you can ensure compliance while protecting your valuable goods and personnel.
